A few years ago, if someone had told you artificial intelligence would become part of everyday farming, most of us would have laughed. Today, it’s no longer a question of whether AI will impact agriculture. It’s a question of who will use it first and gain the advantage.
Here’s the good news: You don’t need to become a technology expert to benefit from AI.

AI Is Another Farm Tool
In fact, I think that’s where many people get stuck. They assume AI is only for Silicon Valley or giant corporations with massive budgets.
I don’t see it that way.
I see AI as another tool, just like GPS, precision irrigation, drones and yield monitors. The growers who learned to use those technologies gained an edge. AI is simply the next evolution.
The biggest mistake I see isn’t using AI incorrectly. It’s not using it at all.
Imagine sitting down after a long day and asking AI to summarize the latest research on navel orangeworm, compare fertilizer programs, organize meeting notes, build a marketing plan, write job descriptions, analyze equipment purchases or explain a new regulation in plain English. Tasks that once took hours can now be completed in minutes.
That doesn’t replace people. It gives good people more time to solve bigger problems.
The biggest mistake I see isn’t using AI incorrectly. It’s not using it at all.
Start with Everyday Tasks
I’ve also found AI has become one of the best brainstorming partners I’ve ever had. Sometimes you don’t need the answer, you need a better question. AI can challenge your thinking, help you compare options and uncover opportunities you may not have considered.
Relationships Still Matter
But here’s one thing AI will never replace: relationships.
Agriculture has always been built on trust. It still takes a handshake, a conversation and years of keeping your word to build lasting partnerships. AI can’t walk an orchard with a grower or understand the instincts that come from decades of experience. What it can do is help you make more informed decisions before you ever step into that meeting or orchard.
Three Ways to Start Using AI
If you’re wondering where to begin, don’t overcomplicate it.
1. Make AI your research assistant.
Before making a major decision, ask AI to summarize the latest university research, compare products or explain new regulations. You’ll walk into conversations with your PCA, CCA or supplier better prepared and able to ask smarter questions.
2. Use AI to find hidden efficiencies.
Ask AI to review your operation for opportunities to save time, reduce costs or improve productivity. Whether it’s irrigation scheduling, labor planning, equipment maintenance or recordkeeping, even one small improvement can pay dividends over an entire season.
3. Brainstorm one new opportunity each month.
Challenge AI to help you think beyond this year’s crop. Ask questions such as, “What’s one way I could improve profitability on my farm?” or “What technologies should I be watching over the next five years?” The growers who consistently ask better questions are often the ones who discover the biggest opportunities.
The growers, processors and ag businesses that embrace AI today won’t just save time, they’ll make better decisions, move faster and stay more competitive in an industry that never stops changing.
At West Coast Nut, we’ve always believed our job is to help you stay one step ahead. AI is another opportunity to do exactly that. We’ll continue bringing you practical ideas, real-world applications and conversations with people already putting these tools to work in California agriculture.
The future isn’t five years away. It’s already here.
The only question is: Will you be leading it or trying to catch up?
